WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE PEER REVIEWED?

You may ask yourself, why is it important that something be peer reviewed?

Well, essentially, peer review is an academic term for quality control.  Each article published in a peer-reviewed journal was closely examined by a panel of reviewers who are experts on the article's topic (that is, the author’s professional peers…hence the term peer review).

With thousands of products to choose from, it is sometimes difficult to determine which are really effective and which are not. Companies that submit their product claims to a peer review process are submitting themselves to close scrutiny and validation.

This is where the beauty of Peer-Reviewed Studies comes in. A study done by ones peers, or essentially by a third party, is not swayed by the company’s marketing agenda.

“When a manuscript is written and submitted to a journal for possible publication, the journal editor selects two or three academic scientists who are well qualified to judge the quality of the work and the soundness of the conclusions drawn. Usually they are leaders , or at least well-know contributors to the field.

They act as anonymous reviewers of the work and they are free to question anything, to ask for additional experiments to be performed, and to state their criticism of the work. The author must then respond to the critiques until all the reviews are satisfied. The reviewers also see each others critiques, also anonymously.

In some journals, only 5-10% of the papers submitted are ultimately accepted and published.

Thats why peer-reviewed articles in reputable journal are more reliable than some information from a blog on the internet. It’s very important to understand the difference.” - Dr. Joe McCord

what is pubmed?

PubMed is a free search engine accessing primarily the MEDLINE database of references and abstracts on life sciences and biomedical topics. The United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health maintain the database as part of the Entrez system of information retrieval.
